Private Addiction Help Without Going to Rehab

Yes, you can get meaningful addiction help without going to rehab. Private recovery coaching offers confidential, one-to-one support that works around your job and family, with no residential stay, no group sessions, and nothing on a medical record. If you drink heavily every day, see a GP before stopping, as withdrawal can be dangerous.

Not everyone who wants to change their relationship with alcohol or drugs wants to disappear into a facility for a month. Maybe you’re holding down a demanding job, running a business, or raising kids. Maybe you just want to talk to someone who understands, without your name ending up in a system. That’s a completely valid path, and it’s more common than people admit.

Redwood Recovery is a private, non-clinical coaching service operating in Sydney, Melbourne and the Gold Coast. We provide accountability, structure and family support. We are not a rehab, not a medical service, and we don’t diagnose or treat anything. We work alongside any clinical care you choose, quietly and confidentially.

Can I get addiction help without going to rehab?

Yes. Rehab is one option, not the only one. Many people reduce or stop drinking and using with structured one-to-one support, honest accountability and a plan that fits their real life. Recovery coaching is designed exactly for people who can’t or won’t step away into a residential program but still want to change.

It’s worth knowing that most people never enter formal treatment at all. In Australia, only around 30–48% of people who would benefit from alcohol and other drug treatment actually access it (Ritter & O’Reilly, Drug and Alcohol Review, 2025). A private, discreet option removes some of the barriers — cost, stigma and disruption — that keep people stuck.

What are my options if I don’t want residential rehab?

There’s a spectrum of support, and these options aren’t mutually exclusive. Many people combine a GP for health checks with coaching for day-to-day accountability. Here’s how the main paths compare.

Option What it offers Privacy Typical cost Time off work
Residential rehab Intensive live-in clinical program Often on medical record $20,000–$40,000+ per month (private) Weeks to months
Recovery coaching (Redwood) One-to-one accountability, structure, family support Fully private, non-clinical Weekly/monthly coaching fee None
GP Health checks, medical detox referral, medication On medical record Medicare/bulk-billed or gap fee Minimal
Support groups (AA/SMART) Peer support, shared experience Anonymous, group setting Free Meeting times

Private residential rehab in Australia typically costs $20,000–$40,000 per month, which puts it out of reach for many people. Coaching is a fraction of that, and it doesn’t require you to explain a month-long absence to your employer or your kids. For a fuller breakdown, see recovery coaching vs rehab.

How does private recovery coaching actually work?

Recovery coaching is regular, structured, one-to-one support focused on the present and the future. Your coach helps you set goals, build routines, spot triggers and stay accountable between sessions. It’s practical and personal, not therapy and not medical care. Sessions happen by phone, video or in person, around your schedule.

A coach isn’t there to judge you or to lecture. They’re there to keep you honest with yourself and to help you follow through on what you’ve decided you want. If you’d like the detail, here’s what a recovery coach does and where it stops.

Do I need medical detox before I stop?

Sometimes, yes, and this matters. If you drink heavily every day, or use daily, stopping suddenly can be genuinely dangerous. Alcohol and benzodiazepine withdrawal in particular can cause seizures and other serious complications. Please see a GP first — they can assess you and arrange a safe, supervised detox if you need one.

Redwood does not provide detox or any medical care, and we’d never tell you to stop cold turkey on your own. What we do is support you before, during and after, working alongside your GP or any clinical team so the whole thing is safer and more sustainable.

Frequently asked questions

Can I recover from addiction without rehab?

Yes. Plenty of people change their relationship with alcohol and drugs without ever entering a residential facility. Structured one-to-one coaching, accountability, family support and, where needed, GP oversight can be enough. Rehab suits some situations, but it isn’t the only route, and it isn’t a requirement for lasting change.

Is private addiction support confidential?

Yes. Redwood’s coaching is non-clinical, so there’s no medical record, no diagnosis and no reporting to insurers, Medicare or your workplace. Conversations stay strictly between you and your coach. For many high-functioning professionals, this discretion is exactly why they choose coaching over clinical pathways in the first place.

How much does private addiction help cost?

Far less than residential rehab, which runs $20,000–$40,000 per month privately in Australia. Coaching is charged as a weekly or monthly fee, so you pay for the support you actually use, with no live-in costs. We’ll be upfront about pricing before you commit to anything.

Do I need medical detox?

It depends on how much and how often you drink or use. Daily heavy drinking or daily drug use can make sudden stopping dangerous, so you should see a GP first. If detox is needed, they can arrange it safely. Redwood supports you around that clinical care but does not provide detox itself.

Does coaching replace my GP or therapist?

No. Coaching sits alongside clinical care, it doesn’t replace it. We’re not a medical or mental health service and we don’t diagnose or treat conditions. Many clients keep seeing their GP or therapist while working with us for day-to-day accountability and structure. The two work well together.

If you’d like to talk it through privately, with no pressure and nothing on any record, you can book a private conversation whenever you’re ready.
